      Hi William, It’s a Fretwrap (by @gruvgear ) I use it to get rid of open string noises when I play certain techniques like tapping or melody playing. Sometimes it takes away some nice resonance so I use it sparingly!

    Great, that was very helpful and well done, thanks! How would you rate the string tension of nylon strings, compared with regular roundwounds or flatwounds..?

    • @bassMAGics
      @bassMAGics 4 місяці тому

      Thanks!🙏 I would say the overall feeling is they that are softer, smoother and the tension is not that far from a regular roundwound string. On this Rob Allen MB-2 I have always just played tape wounds. I still have the bass use the LaBella Cooper White Nylon strings now. In fact the same set has been on this bass for quite a few years now. They last for a long time! So if you find a suitable tape wound string for a certain bass you can be happy and probably skip re-stringing for a while! :)

    This video really helped me understand what the Thunderbrown strings have to offer, and I think I'll be buying a set of them. At about the 3:48 mark there is text explaining that the recording path includes a Jule Monique and a Phil Jones Double Four. The Phil Jones is a borderline affordable for me, but the Monique is way out of my price range, unfortunately. Any suggestions for more affordable options for one or both of these items? A video along these lines would be really helpful, though I suspect those aren't the kind of videos you want to make.

    Thank you Magnus. The playability favors my trying the ThunderBrowns. The dark and loose, upright bass sound of the ThunderGuts suggests that I might like those better. But perhaps equalization could make the ThunderBrowns more like my preferred sound. I do like slides and vibrato. I just purchased a Kala SMHG-FL (my first U-Bass), which came with round-wound strings, making it sound more like an electric guitar. But I am looking for a sound closer to that of an upright bass. My Kala SMHG-FL came with two nuts, one for roundwound, and one for poly. If one buzzes or sticks, I can try the other.

      I’m glad you found my review helpful. I do believe you can make the Thunderbrowns to sound darker or fuller with a touch of EQ. I still favor the Thunderbrowns and they are still my preferred “poly”-string! Happy UBass playing and good luck in the search of your ultimate sound!

    Hi there, thanks for the great channel. You're the only person I could find on UA-cam playing Fretless Strandberg. I'm on the waiting list for it. What's your overall review on it? pros and cons in comparison with other fretless basses you've played? Thank you.

    • @bassMAGics
      @bassMAGics 8 місяців тому

      Hi, I’m glad you like my channel! I won a .strandberg* Boden bass in an international competition back in 2020 and super fortunate to come to the HQ to choose a bass. All models were there, fretted and fretless 4 and 5 strings. I decided on a fretted Original 5-string but was super tempted to go with a fretless… I have been playing fretless basses since the early 90s and it has almost always been on a lined fingerboard. I have found it better to have the “guidelines” especially when doing big jumps. A multi scale fretless is a big challenge! Since it has lines it’s doable! :) I really like the fretless 4-string I have played for a while now but haven’t done any experimenting with different strings yet. I do like the flatwounds that are on it although I have mostly played rounds on similar fretless basses. I do like the extra “growl” rounds can give me but on the Boden bass the flats has been nice! Besides those types of strings I also use LaBella Copper Nylon strings on a fantastic Rob Allen Guitars MB-2 I’ve had for more than 10 years now. These instrument together with my fretless Kala UBasses give me plenty of tonal options! What are your main reasons standing in line for a fretless Boden? Sound, esthetics? Are you playing a fretted Boden now? Good luck with you playing and acquiring of the fretless Boden? Will you be getting a 4 or 5-string?

    • @graphicsociety1
      @graphicsociety1 8 місяців тому

      @@bassMAGics Thanks a lot for the detailed response. Your playing speaks loudly about why you won that competition. Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing your talent with us, music lovers. I've been playing fretless for a couple of years. I have an Ibanez SRF705 (unlined 5-string fretless). Just a couple of months ago I came across the new multi-scale headless series from Ibanez and bought a guitar and a bass, which changed my life as these instruments are super lightweight and ergonomically designed. They put no pressure on my neck so I can play for hours without pain. Now after 2 months, I can't play with my old regular-fretted bass guitar! :) So I like to have a multi-scale headless fretless 5-string bass guitar, and apparently, Strandberg is the only company who's ever made it. I contacted them already but apparently, they have discontinued this line of bass guitars. It's good that you have yours :)

    Hi Magnuss, great playing as alaays. How does the ibanez srh500f compare with the Rob Allen MB-2?

    • @bassMAGics
      @bassMAGics 8 місяців тому

      Thanks I’m glad you liked this! The MB-2 and SRH500f have the piezo-pickup in common although the design is different. The MB-2 has a set bridge and the Ibanez a regular bridge with adjustable piezo in each string saddle. I have had my MB-2 since 2011 and have played it maaaany hours. It’s super light and plays like butter. It has one of the nicest fretboards I have ever played. It has a single volume but the tonal options are endless since it responds to slightest variation of my hand placement and dynamic touch. The balance standing up is amazing and it super comfortable to play because it the light chambered body. The SRH500f is a super affordable option (~$800 compared to ~$4.200 for the MB-2) if you want a great fretless with a piezo bridge. I haven’t played it as much as the MB-2 and have only used it with the stock flatwound strings. On the MB-2 I’ve always used LaBella strings and have had the Copper Tape Nylons for many years now. I feel those are the perfect string for the MB-2. Not to bright not to dark. The balance and how the Ibanez hangs and is positioned is a bit further away to the left compared to the MB-2. Because of that the first fret is not at the same position and that throws of my muscle memory quite a bit. I do prefer the slightly smaller footprint of the MB-2. Hope this helps a bit! Take care!

    • @bassMAGics
      @bassMAGics Рік тому

      That’s a great question! On my ubasses it all depends on what kind of sound I’m after. Usually with any of the “rubber” strings I use the same strings for a long time. If I change stings it’s because I want to try something new. The strings you hear in this video have now been on that UBass since November 2021! I know people sometimes have trouble with some strings but so far (knock on wood) I have been able to use the different rubber strings I have been using as long as I have wanted to. I should also add that I mostly play fretless ubasses when it comes to rubber strings. When it comes to round wound strings it’s a bit different since I usually use them on fretted ubasses and they tend to wear out after while. The sound ideal is also different with those. I need them to have a certain “zing” to them. If they sound to “dull”, or show lots of fret wire wear I need to change them! Hope this helps! Good luck with you playing!

    Can anyone tell me the advantage of tying the string to the pegs , rather than simply winding them on.

    • @bassMAGics
      @bassMAGics Рік тому

      It’s so they don’t slip so easy. I find it makes them stay in tune much faster. Especially the Pahoehoe strings were so stretchy that it took quite some time to get the to stretch out enough to stay in tune. Usually you have to re-string after a while even when using this method because of how they stretch over time. You don’t want to have to many wraps around the tuning peg. If you’re unlucky it might even snap! Good luck with your stringing and UBass playing Stephen!

    Thank you for this review! have you tried the Flatwounds, and have an opinion on the Thunderbrown vs. Flatwounds?

      Thanks, I’m glad you found it useful! I have a string review from 2019 where I compare a few strings. You can find it on playubass.com On a fretless UBass (solid body or acoustic) I like to use either Thunderbrown or flatwounds. On a fretted bass I prefer flats or the new Aquila Flat Spirals!

      @@flashner I had Thunderbrowns on a fretless Scout and was happy with that combo. I’m thinking of putting flats on it now… If I do it soon I’ll try to share some sound/video samples! :)

    Hi Magnus, I'm also a big fan of these strings and wish they lasts longer, but the G began to crack after 2 months. Am I so unlucky or it's common with this type of rubber? Thanks.
